HUNGER FOR THE WILD - Series One

Logan and Brown visit the rich waters of Kawhia Harbour to find out about flounder, the fascinating flatfish that has been feeding the people of Kawhia for over 700 years.

The first stop is the local fish 'n' chip shop, "The Happy Flounder", where Greg Taylor is out of flounder, but thankfully there's plenty of rig fresh from the harbour. Greg shares his recipe for the perfect batter and makes an excellent rendition of the kiwi classic - fish and chips.

Up at dawn the next day Logie hooks up with Greg's father Graham, who's heading out to catch some flounder for the shop. When they return, Graham's wife Lorraine pan-fries one from the catch - Logie's first taste of a genuine Kawhia flounder.

That evening Brownie meets Davis Apiti at nearby Aotea harbour, and at night they search the mudflats and spear for their flounder. For breakfast Davis shares a favourite recipe inspired by a mix of his Maori and his wife's Asian cultures.

Logan and Brown re-unite at low tide to gather some pipis off the beach and then with a borrowed net, drag for their flounder. Then on the side of this beautiful harbour, they pan fry the flounder and serve it with a mouth-watering pipi and herb stew.

Brownie: I used to think why would anyone live here on a harbour like this with mudflats, but coming here, and experiencing this, it's a no brainer. The tide coming in and out, changing all the time, all this kaimoana on your doorstep... It's the kiwi experience that I hope lasts forever.
