HUNGER FOR THE WILD - Series One

Logan and Brown head to Punakaiki on the Wild West Coast and team up with their old mate Ginge Connors who has a clever way of catching crayfish.

Logie goes snatch potting, which means a pre-dawn walk out to Ginge's favourite fishing spot - a high rocky outcrop fifty feet above the surging surf and rocks. Standing on the narrow ledge in the rain is not for the faint hearted, but after snatch potting here for twenty years, Ginge has it sorted.

Ginge baits an open-mouthed cray-pot and throws it near an underwater den, where hopefully the bait will lure out the crays. After the pot has been sitting for ten minutes he snatches it up as quickly as possible.  As Ginge says, "You have to be real precise." Too quick and you tip them over the side, too slow and they have time to climb out the top and escape.

Back at the bach, Al prepares a basil mayonnaise and then he's down the road to gather chorizo and mussels for a local twist on a Spanish chunky tomato, mussel and chorizo seafood stew. When Logie returns he cranks up the barbecue for char-grilled crayfish to serve with Brownie's stew. A garnish of basil mayonnaise and a simple watercress salad complete this tasty seafood meal.

I had to get there, and despite being roped up, it was still exciting, scary and wild. I could see why Ginge loved fishing there."
